The Roots of Buffalo Nation: Gerritt ‘Buff’ Waterlander’s Journey in Native American Artistry

From Relic Hunter to Artisan Craftsman

Born in the heart of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Gerritt “Buff” Waterlander’s journey to Buffalo Nation began amidst ancient relics of American Indian history. With a profound respect for Native American art cultivated by adventures in undisturbed lands alongside his father, Gerritt’s early years were spent unearthing treasures of a bygone era. A granite Celt discovery in youth spurred a lifelong passion, leading him to walk miles of farmer’s fields and explore sacred mounds, accruing a remarkable collection including arrowheads, broken pipes, and firestone. His dedication to seeking out remnants of the past has seen him an active member of the Michigan Archaeology Society and a revered handler of artifacts.
